happy backwards day!

following the much honored tradition of granny mask, today we celebrate backwards day!
you see, if it’s backwards day that means that dessert must come first…

and this morning was welcomed with joyful glee.

now, i will say that for the past 8 years, jeff and i have squabbled over what real strawberry shortcake is. he said it consisted of biscuits, ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream etc. and i said he was crazy. biscuits??? what was he thinking?
"it’s angel food cake, strawberries, whipped cream, and definitely NO ice cream" says I. well we’ve never come to an agreement on this issue. so we’ve agreed to disagree.

until…a few weeks ago we had my mom’s birthday dinner at the cheesecake factory. and we ordered her strawberry shortcake for dessert. and lo and behold…biscuits, ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream…

and here i am today admitting my wrong for all the world to see. you certainly can’t argue with the cheesecake factory by golly.

and so, yes indeed, i stand corrected! 🙂

this morning’s recipe for Classic Strawberry Shortcake

2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
dash nutmeg
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs separated
additional sugar
2 1/2 cups strawberries
whipping cream

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg into large bowl. Cut in butter to resemble coarse meal. In bowl blend milk and egg yolks with fork. Stir into flour mixture to make a soft dough. Divide dough into 6 portions; form into balls. Pat balls out on greased baking sheet to 3-inch circles. Brush cakes with egg whites. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 450 degrees 10-12 minutes until golden. Remove to rack, cool. Sweeten strawberries to taste. Halve cakes horizontally. On plate, garnish with strawberries and whipped cream.

  1. That is so funny. I am with you on the angel food cake, strawberries, and whipped cream. I had never known any different until I married Tyler. Jerry makes it with biscuits, strawberries, and whipped cream. I remember thinking “how odd”. I guess we were both wrong. Maybe it’s growing up in Utah? Who knows. At any rate a yummy breakfast:)

  2. I grew up with biscuits in my Strawberry Shortcake. I never thought anything different until I had roommates at BYU. It doesn’t matter to me…I love it ALL! Thanks for the recipe as well! I have actually wanted to look up a goodie…and you helped me out! Sometimes it really DOES pay to procrastinate and by lazy1 😉
I’m in favor of the opposite day! I’m gonna have to incorporate that for SURE!

  3. (uh-hmmmmm-uh-hmmmm) May I clarify the term “short” cake? Nope, it doesn’t mean low to the ground (or to the plate). short in this case means shortening (Crisco, butter– whatever you use.) The shortening makes them crispier and yummier when they soak up the strawberry juice. So, yeah, it’s biscuits, with extra shortening or butter and usually extra sugar. Meaning that the super market sponge cake dessert cups and angel food cake do not qualify.
By the way Cher, yours looks really, REALLY super yummy, and your recipe definitly qualifies!! Happy backwards day, everyone!!

  4. Wow, that looks good. I was with you! I thought it was angel food cake.
What a fun tradition, backwards day. Much better that all the “tricks.”

  5. What a great idea. Dessert always comes first in my book. Maybe I am a backwards person–hooray for me! I think we may be having this on Saturday. Looks too good to pass up!

  6. I mean backwards day…not opposite day! What’s wrong with me?!? It’s been a long day…like every other day! lol.

  7. So a question about backwards day. Do you have breakfast for dinner? What else do you do? I really LOVE the idea! Another tradition in my house is always great.

  8. yep, melissa…pretty much the normal day’s routine is done backwards.
so dessert for breakfast and then dinner if you want.
    wear clothes backwards.
and chores or jobs don’t have to be done until after school.
    then breakfast for dinner!
as jeff recounts it, it was one of his favorite days of the year. especially the part about not having to do jobs until after school! 🙂

  9. very cool tradition to have a backwards day! Thanks for sharing the recipe too. I never thought strawberry shortcake was anything more than shortcake, strawberries and whipping cream….so I was with you on that one. Loved the pictures of Ella’s birthday and the family picture. Wow, we are both mama’s of three now–can you believe it??! Fun that Ella and Aubrey now share the same birthday. Glad to see you blogging again–I have missed it! Love ya and miss ya–Krista

  10. Cherie, I’m with you. I have NEVER heard of biscuits with strawberries and whip cream. But…it all sounds yummy. I love that you made that tasty dessert for breakfast. You are so clever!

  11. Cherie- your baking skills combined with photography were enough to throw me over the edge. I made your recipe yesterday and it was D-Licious!! Thanks for sharing!

  12. I have been drooling over this dessert ever since I first saw it on your blog, so I am finally going to make it for Spencer’s birthday this Saturday. Can I just say, I wish you were my mom? I guess I’m lucky, you kind of were for about 7 months that one time when we lived in Spain…
